Today, goldfish and koi ponds can be constructed from many materials, including pre-formed plastic, liner (either vinyl or butyl), concrete, or spray blown plastics. 

Filtration systems run the gamut from simple single-stage biological filters, to many stage filters employing several kinds of filtration material.  UV lights, automatic feeders, ozone generators, and full-pond heaters are some of the enhancements that can be added to ponds in an attempt to provide a better environment for goldfish or koi.

Our first pond was built over 24 years ago.  At that time, dedicated pond filtration systems were not on the market, and additional enhancements were unheard-of.
